High-precision orientation mapping from spherical harmonic transform indexing of electron backscatter diffraction patterns.

Gregory Sparks, Paul A Shade, Michael D Uchic, Stephen R Niezgoda, Michael J Mills, Mark Obstalecki,

The angular precision of crystal orientation determination by cross-correlating dynamically simulated electron diffraction patterns with experimental patterns via spherical harmonic analysis is investigated. The best precision found in this study is 0.016°, which approaches the level reported in the literature for other high-precision electron backscatter diffraction implementations. At this angular ... Project to Improve the Transcription of Clinical Order Information into a Radiology Information System.

Michael J Mills, John X Nguyen, Ben Himelhoch, Abdelouahid Souala, Anthony Khashola, Sumita Joseph, Phillip Rathousky, Roger Gonda, Michael C Y Juan,

<h4>Context</h4>Inaccurate and incomplete imaging order information presented to interpreting radiologists is a persistent problem in many radiology settings. Computerized Physician Order Entry processes in clinic-based settings are often inconsistent, and radiology transcription clerks continue to play a critical role in transmitting accurate content and information from referring physician orders to ... Effect of mixed partial occupation of metal sites on the phase stability of γ-Cr23-xFe x C6 (x = 0-3) carbides.

Maaouia Souissi, Marcel H F Sluiter, Tetsuya Matsunaga, Masaaki Tabuchi, Michael J Mills, Ryoji Sahara,

The effect of mixed partial occupation of metal sites on the phase stability of the γ-Cr23-xFe x C6 (x = 0-3) carbides is explored as function of composition and temperature. Ab initio calculations combined with statistical thermodynamics approaches reveal that the site occupation of the carbides may be incorrectly predicted when only ... Read more >>

Magnetically-driven phase transformation strengthening in high entropy alloys.

Changning Niu, Carlyn R LaRosa, Jiashi Miao, Michael J Mills, Maryam Ghazisaeidi,

CrCoNi alloy exhibits a remarkable combination of strength and plastic deformation, even superior to the CrMnFeCoNi high-entropy alloy. We connect the magnetic and mechanical properties of CrCoNi, via a magnetically tunable phase transformation. While both alloys crystallize as single-phase face-centered-cubic (fcc) solid solutions, we find a distinctly lower-energy phase in ... Read more >>

Cost and Return on Investment of a Work-Family Intervention in the Extended Care Industry: Evidence From the Work, Family, and Health Network.

William N Dowd, Jeremy W Bray, Carolina Barbosa, Krista Brockwood, David J Kaiser, Michael J Mills, David A Hurtado, Brad Wipfli,

<h4>Objective</h4>To estimate the cost and return on investment (ROI) of an intervention targeting work-family conflict (WFC) in the extended care industry.<h4>Methods</h4>Costs to deliver the intervention during a group-randomized controlled trial were estimated, and data on organizational costs-presenteeism, health care costs, voluntary termination, and sick time-were collected from interviews and administrative ... Sustaining SBIRT in the wild: simulating revenues and costs for Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment programs.

Alexander J Cowell, William N Dowd, Michael J Mills, Jesse M Hinde, Jeremy W Bray,

<h4>Aims</h4>To examine the conditions under which Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) programs can be sustained by health insurance payments.<h4>Design</h4>A mathematical model was used to estimate the number of patients needed for revenues to exceed costs.<h4>Setting</h4>Three medical settings in the United States were examined: in-patient, out-patient and emergency ... Emergence of healing in the Antarctic ozone layer.

Susan Solomon, Diane J Ivy, Doug Kinnison, Michael J Mills, Ryan R Neely, Anja Schmidt,

Industrial chlorofluorocarbons that cause ozone depletion have been phased out under the Montreal Protocol. A chemically driven increase in polar ozone (or "healing") is expected in response to this historic agreement. Observations and model calculations together indicate that healing of the Antarctic ozone layer has now begun to occur during ... Read more >>

Return on Investment of a Work-Family Intervention: Evidence From the Work, Family, and Health Network.

Carolina Barbosa, Jeremy W Bray, William N Dowd, Michael J Mills, Phyllis Moen, Brad Wipfli, Ryan Olson, Erin L Kelly,

OBJECTIVE:To estimate the return on investment (ROI) of a workplace initiative to reduce work-family conflict in a group-randomized 18-month field experiment in an information technology firm in the United States. METHODS:Intervention resources were micro-costed; benefits included medical costs, productivity (presenteeism), and turnover. Regression models were used to estimate the ROI, ... Read more >>

Costs of alcohol screening and brief intervention in medical settings: a review of the literature.

Jeremy W Bray, Gary A Zarkin, Jesse M Hinde, Michael J Mills,

<h4>Objective</h4>This article summarizes the literature on the implementation costs of alcohol screening and brief intervention (SBI) in medical settings.<h4>Method</h4>Electronic databases were searched using SBI- and cost-related terms. Methodological approaches and cost estimates were abstracted from each study and categorized based on the cost methodology. Costs were updated to 2009 U.S. ... Read more >>

Polarization-induced pn diodes in wide-band-gap nanowires with ultraviolet electroluminescence.

Santino D Carnevale, Thomas F Kent, Patrick J Phillips, Michael J Mills, Siddharth Rajan, Roberto C Myers,

Almost all electronic devices utilize a pn junction formed by random doping of donor and acceptor impurity atoms. We developed a fundamentally new type of pn junction not formed by impurity-doping, but rather by grading the composition of a semiconductor nanowire resulting in alternating p and n conducting regions due ... Benefits and costs of substance abuse treatment programs for state prison inmates: results from a lifetime simulation model.

Gary A Zarkin, Alexander J Cowell, Katherine A Hicks, Michael J Mills, Steven Belenko, Laura J Dunlap, Kimberly A Houser, Vince Keyes,

Reflecting drug use patterns and criminal justice policies throughout the 1990s and 2000s, prisons hold a disproportionate number of society's drug abusers. Approximately 50% of state prisoners meet the criteria for a diagnosis of drug abuse or dependence, but only 10% receive medically based drug treatment. Because of the link ... Read more >>

Conducting economic evaluations of screening and brief intervention for hazardous drinking: Methods and evidence to date for informing policy.

Alexander J Cowell, Jeremy W Bray, Michael J Mills, Jesse M Hinde,

<h4>Issues</h4>Many policy review articles have concluded that alcohol screening and brief intervention (SBI) is both cost-effective and cost-beneficial. Yet a recent cost-effectiveness review for the United Kingdom's National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence suggests that these conclusions may be premature.<h4>Approach</h4>This article offers a brief synopsis of the various types ... A two-way parabolic equation that accounts for multiple scattering.

Joseph F Lingevitch, Michael D Collins, Michael J Mills, Richard B Evans,

A two-way parabolic equation that accounts for multiple scattering is derived and tested. A range-dependent medium is divided into a sequence of range-independent regions. The field is decomposed into outgoing and incoming fields in each region. The conditions between vertical interfaces are implemented using rational approximations for the square root ...
